Framing and Display Recommendations
What’s your favorite way to display your work?
This is a common question I’m asked, and one of the hardest ones to answer. It is also to main reason that I don’t — for the most part — offer framed prints. There are SO many options! Frame material, color, size, mat or no mat, mat size. The list is of options is exhaustive and there are so many that I can’t really pick a favorite!
With that being said, I will point you in the direction of framing styles that I prefer and personally use, since you asked after all LOL. Links to each frame will be provided to make life even easier!
Framing 13×19 prints
13×19 is my favorite and most popular size print to make, so let’s start with them. Most modern cameras, mine included, shoot in a 2:3 aspect ratio. Printing on 13×19 (A3+) paper allows me to print a full 12×18 photo without the need to strategically crop the image and leaves a nice 1/2″ border making matting and display easier than a borderless print.
For general display of these prints I have 2 preferences
Format Frames
Format frames are my most used for 2 simple reasons. Price and ease of use. Pop off the glass, pop in your print, pop on the glass. Done! Can’t get much easier that that. Not to mention they provide a simple, clean look.
Format frames can be purchased individually, or in packs of 6 at almost half the price of individual frames! (I ALWAYS get the packs!)
Matted Frames
If you want a larger piece for your wall, a matted frame is the way to go. The most common and my preferred size is an 18×24 frame matted to 12×18 or 13×19. This gives the image a 2 1/2″ matted border between the print and the frame. You can buy frames that come with a precut mat, or buy the frame and mat separately for a wider range of colors and a more custom look. You also have the choice of glass and acrylics to cover the print in your frame. The possibilities are endless!
Framing 8×10 and 11×14 Prints
As I mentioned in the 13×19 section, these prints require the original image to be cropped, and I try to do it in a way that is as unnoticeable as possible. The plus side is that frames for these prints are common and readily available at a wide variety of stores. They do make format frames for both 8×10 and 11×14 prints, but prefer going with matted frames to give them a little more presence on the wall.
*Note: On a couple of occasions the 8×10 and 11×14 prints were a bit snug in the format frames and needed a small trim to fit correctly.
